Village Views Past

It is with great thanks the two pictures below have been supplied by Zoe Lawson who used to live at 6 The Green, and is now living in London. If you'd like to contact her you can do via the forum. Move your mouse over the pics for a larger view.

The Village Green, Helpringham, c1900 From Highgate looking into Helpringham Village

Sadly, the Co-Op is no longer there and is now a private house. - I say this because now I have to go to Heckington or Billingborough to shop out of hours (which is my usual time for functioning). Saying that though, the village PO is brill and if the powers that be close it, they'll kill a community focus.

Notice the windmill is no longer there. Although there is still the remains of one on Highgate itself to the left of the picture (see the home page).

If you want to sign a petition that gets straight to government about PO closures, go here: Post Office Closures

Just for a comparison, below is a recent picture from almost the same place as from where the above was taken. The larger trees, I'm informed by a "village venerable" were planted in either 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee or ten years later in 1897 for her Diamond Jubilee, which dates the photograph befor 1900. The white building in the photograph above is not the Nag's Head but the Village Blacksmith's (the Nag's Head is behind), who owned the Green which he bequeathed to the villagers in his will. There is some contention amongst todays villagers as to whom controls the use of the Green, whether it is the Village Parish Council or the villagers themselves. The building (no 4) was an ale and wine only pub, The Crown (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong!), that was pulled down in 1954 and not bombed in the second world war. (Sorry, Zoe). All this caused a bit of a stir in the Nag's the other night!
