PETTICOAT CLUB

At out June meeting we were transported back to an era of silent films and picture-houses when Mo Brader came along to talk to us about Lincolnshire-born film stars. From the production of the first film in 1896 to modern day epics it was interesting to hear about the local stars of stage, screen and television, the most notable and prolific of whom were Judy Campbell Judy Campbell (born in Grantham), Elizabeth AllanElizabeth Allan (born in Skegness) and Arthur Lucan, Old Mother RileyArthur Lucan, Old Mother Riley (born in Sibsey). We also folowed the history of the cinemas themselves, lamenting at the demise of the Picturedrome in Sleaford in the year 2000.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 8th July, when we will be treated to Flower Arranging by Julie Gibson. A very different evening - do come along - new members and guests are always welcome.

Memorial Hall Diary & News

As you know the Memorial Hall operates an equal opportunities policy, aiming to provide for all groups within our community, sadly we have to inform you that one group can no longer be accommodated .The Squirrels have been evicted! Their spacious accommodation within the roof and diet of insulation material has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Work on the new roof is progressing well and should be completed within the next couple of weeks. The high standard of insulation should mean we will be in for a warmer winter.

There is now a post box outside the hall so any communications for the committee can be left there as it is checked daily..

Lunch Club received kind donations of two dishwashers, a small freezer and a fridge; thanks go to Mrs C Kidd and Mrs A Watts for these additions to our facilities.

A reminder that Lunch Club meets every fortnight on alternate Thursdays in the Memorial Hall. New members are always welcome. For information, please ring 884.

In the year 2050...

Lincolnshire with a sea-level rise of 4 metres

Helpringham's average height above sea-level is around 29 feet. This is a projection to 2050 of the sea-levels at a rise of 4 metres, roughly 12 feet. Helpringham has now become a marsh-coast village. What is interesting from this projection is how the coastline relates to the old coast road that comes up from Bourne, through Dunsby, Pointon and Billingborough and up to Great Hale and Heckington. Donnington to Boston has become an archipeligo and cut off from the rest of us. (Not a bad thing, some of you may say!)

Helpringham from the Old English Helpric+inga+ham or " homestead of a man called Helpric," and listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as Helperincham.
